12 Free Crochet Beanie Patterns to Make for Friends (Or Yourself!)

It's pretty self-explanatory what this post is all about. It's Fall... It's cold... We have LOTS of yarn...

I decided to make a roundup of my 12 favorite beanies from the internet and share it with you all. From beginner to intermediate to advanced level beanies, you'll find a little bit of everything in this collection. I've labeled the headers for easy browsing as well.

So if you're starting your hunt for new beanies to gift friends and family this year, or are looking for a new crochet challenge, grab a cup of hot chocolate and read on!

Easy Level Beanies

1) Monkey Around Beanie by Through The Loop Yarn Craft

Starting off, we have a classic sock monkey design beanie. Starting with Sc BLO ribbing, then worked in the round up, this simple beanie is a great gift for those who love sock monkeys ;) Bonus: this is also a great stash-buster!

2) Crochet Snowball Slouch Hat by Left in Knots

In this slouch hat, all of the work is in the yarn, folks. This simple beanie uses only a couple of stitches, and one of them is single crochet. The color change is included in Lion Brand's popular Scarfie yarn, so no need to fuss over color changes and weaving in extra ends.

3) Oxford Beanie by Cypress and Wool

As a classic knit look without the needles, what's not to love about this beanie? And if you have special fuzzy yarn like in the second photo, you can easily upgrade this beanie into a very fancy looking beanie, indeed. (Shh! You don't have to tell your friends it's not crochet!)

4) Double Brim Coffee Beanie

I love the warm brown of this beanie. It definitely reminds me of coffee, chocolate, fall leaves, leather bound journals, bookstores, and long chilly walks downtown holding hands with a loved one. I'm sure if you make this beanie, you'd feel the same way!

5) Houndstooth Crochet Hat by Daisy Farm Crafts

Last time I checked, the Houndstooth pattern was still in style. Make this beanie for friends and family who love to stay in tune with fashion and haute couture. Or those who are iffy about handmade knitwear in general. No one can resist a good, classic Houndstooth.

Oh, and if you think this looks like it should be difficult, don't worry! It's under the easy header because guess what? It's only made of alternating Sc and Dc! How amazing is that?

6) Jenna Beanie by CrochetDreamz

Here we've got another uncomplicated beanie that focuses on the stitching of the body of the hat. One of the joys of crocheting is appreciating the stitches, above anything else. Not the colors, not the eccentric shapes or patterns... just the beautiful repetition of what your hands made. This would be a great gift for someone who will appreciate that aspect of handmade items.

Bonus: this pattern has a matching scarf!

Intermediate Level Beanies

7) Winter Rays Ribbed Crochet Hat

The 3-D effect is strong in this beanie. If you think you're ready for some Front-post crochet action, this is a great project to try. This beanie can easily be converted to bright and colorful beanie using brighter pops of color. Or maybe even a neon with a neutral? This beanie definitely wins the award for "best experimental hat project." You can be SO experimental with this beanie and you can't go wrong.

8) Leafly Autumn Hat by Wilmade

Maybe you've got some extra glittery novelty yarns you're not sure what to do with? This beanie is perfect for using up those extra lively skeins you'd otherwise not use for full-on projects. They get their perfect spotlight on the backdrop of a beanie. I love the glittery brown yarn used her to convey maple leaves. Super creative!

9) Snow Country Ski Beanie

Now here begins some varied stitch action. If you want to practice some more stitches, beanies are a great place to start. Kristen Holloway Designs has some gorgeous beanie patterns you won't want to miss.

Bonus: this pattern has a matching scarf!

10) Mosaic Crochet Hat by MJ's Off the Hook Designs

Do you think you'd want to try some Mosaic crochet? It's a special kind of color work technique that uses Double crochet and well-time color changes to work up some amazing patterns. You can use as many colors as you like. For this beanie, it uses two an looks amazing!

This beanie also even comes with a YouTube tutorial for more guidance.

I recommend you check out the rest of MJ's colorwork collection as well. She has two more colorwork beanies that are drool-worthy !

11) Leopard Print Slouch Beanie by Peace and Paige

Here we have another style classic, the leopard print. This beanie is probably not for the faint of heart... and by faint of heart, I mean those who don't count their stitches. When it comes to Intarsia crochet, counting stitches is the name of the game, but isn't it so worth it? Beautiful!

12) Fair Isle Crochet Beanie by For the Frills

Lastly, we have an ombre pattern that is made by your own two hands. These thoughtfully placed specs create and ombre effect as the different colored specs mingle with one another in the middle of the beanie. Anyone would be impressed by this amazing beanie.
